NYFW: It was chaos backstage...could you tell?
NYFW: It's known for its exclusivity and artistry all around the world. I'm lucky enough to have a job in the industry that places me right in the middle of fashion week every season. The glitz and glamour of the fashion shows that A-list celebrities and magazine editors pile into the audience to see isn't always exactly what is going on behind the scenes. I do everything backstage, from checking in models and press to helping dress and send out models for the show. This means I have a super hands on job and, well, I've seen it all. Some of our fashion shows go smoothly, others don't. It's a true art to have it be chaos backstage and still have the show go on with the models looking perfect. For example: The Blonds. One of the biggest shows we at EB Consults put on during fashion week. The first model was planned to walk the runway at 9PM but it didn't happen that way. Due to venue complications (which involved checking-in and shuffling almost 1,000 guests, hair and makeup people, models and press up an elevator), extremely detailed hair, makeup, nails and outfits which took far longer to complete than expected, setting up the music act which was to play a concert at the end of the fashion show and ensuring all guests were seated properly, we didn't start the show until 10:15PM. That's right, over an hour late. By this time the guests were intoxicated after waiting at the venue bar to be seated and were in a hot, crowded room so people were passing out and throwing up, security was under staffed and the entirety of backstage staff was exhausted. We sent models out on the runway as we were pressing on their final fake nails and were zipping their bodices. The designer had planned to end the show but instead began it to buy us more time. All of this chaos was going on backstage but aside from the wait, could the audience tell we were struggling? Take a look at our full fashion show and see for yourself...
Have even more interest in The Blonds after watching their incredible runway show? Here are some of my favorite articles and interviews with the designers!
1. This first article is an incredible interview which dives into the designers backgrounds and inspiration, one of which is another old boss of mine, Patricia Field. She's known as a runway and costume designer. From having her own brand to being the costume designer for The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City, Pat is a redheaded legend... here are some photos for proof!
2. Another amazing interview! From 2011, this piece by Elle Canada discusses the way the brand got its start... with Beyonce!
3. Lastly, is The Blonds show from NYFW in September! Lead by Teyana Taylor who was a major hit, this is one of my favorite shows i've ever had the pleasure of working on. This team of models was incredible, I was so proud to see a couple plus sized models on the runway!
